This is where hiking France meets train tours in France - a sacré ensemble and a 'low-carbon'  holiday with a difference. Walking Cevennes by Rail is your chance to enjoy stimulating hiking laced together by short train-rides
along the Cevennes mountain railroad, the Cévenol. It is a fascinating criss-cross journey across valleys and over
viaducts on a journey along the "line of 100 tunnels." Add to the melting pot the fact that such a tour is the quintessence of responsible travel, and you recognise its value as setting the standard for walking holidays in France in the green future.

The 'axe of economic rationality' was hanging over this unprofitable mountain railway, but it recently won a reprieve. So get cracking and enjoy one of the best rail tours in France while it's still here!

a) Theme

If you like walking and railways, then our combination of rail tours in France with France walking tours is your perfect holiday mix. Walking Cevennes by Rail is a chance to enjoy some fine walking in France's Ardeche, Gard and Lozere. The contrasts are quite marked and equalled only by the changing landscapes you admire from the comfort of your seat on 'Le Cévenol,' the diesel train linking Nîmes to Clermont-Ferrand. For those that want to get away from the car, either as a break from your habitual driving or as part of a commitment to the environment, there isn’t a better way to do it than participate in arguably one of the most eco-friendly hiking and rail tours in France. Enjoy the rides, delight in the changing Cevennes landscape and get a sense of what you are about to experience upon arrival at your next destination. And then you get to do some stimulating hiking at the next stop, tailored to fit your needs!

Built over a century-and-a-half ago to facilitate the transport of wine and coal to Paris, the line bears testimony to man's engineering ingenuity as it wends its way along its course from Alès to La Bastide via Villefort, through innumerable tunnels and across some breathtaking viaducts.

Walking France with the Cévenol railway brings you comfortable accommodations at each programmed stop and memorable hiking trails that serve to bring to life the land linked together by the Cevennes train.
